Kevin's Story

When Coach Ostrowski first approached us about a scholarship in memory of our son Kevin, we were honored and thrilled. An opportunity to keep Kevin’s legacy alive through various ways such as the Crusader Football scholarship is an amazing gift. Coach also asked us to write about Kevin’s story for the website. This was a difficult task, because trying to sum up Kevin in just a few paragraphs is near impossible. There are so many stories to tell, chapters to write and lives that have been impacted because of Kevin.

Chapter one started on 4/6/04 when Kevin was born. From the moment that beautiful baby with is huge dimples came into our lives, his mother called him “Kevin from Heaven”. He was a great baby who loved to eat and take long naps. As Kevin grew older, his quiet ways and almost painfully shy personality slowly began to fade. He started pre-school in the fall of 2006 and loved it. He was shy but easily made friends and his confidence began to grow. He loved his 3 older brothers- Colin, Danny and Michael- very much, always feeling like he was “one of the guys”. Whether it was whiffle ball or football in the backyard, going fishing with his dad and brothers, going to the park with mom, or vacationing in Ocean City or the mountains, Kevin treasured every minute with his family and friends. We welcomed 3 more children after Kevin- Meghan, Joseph and Tommy- and we continued our routine. Kevin was a great brother and could easily play with the big ones and the smaller ones just the same, being the middle child of seven, he had to!

In the fall of 2009 Kevin entered Kindergarten at St. Luke’s in Glenside. Kevin made many new friends and did well in the classroom. After watching his older brothers go off to school every day for the previous few years, he couldn’t wait to follow in their footsteps. He played soccer, basketball and baseball for Hunter and GYAC. Even at the age of 6, Kevin had a real competitive edge, and did not like to lose. Kevin’s love for his home town sports teams, especially the Phillies, has become well known over the last few months. He was loyal and always stuck with his teams, no matter what the score.

It has been a difficult, painful time since Kevin’s accident. Someone recently told us the reason we have so much pain, is because the more love that exists, the more it hurts when that person is gone. This couldn’t be truer! Kevin’s story isn’t over, it is just beginning in many ways. New chapters will continue to be written by his family, friends and all those who have come to know him, including the young man who will be awarded the Kevin Flach Scholarship each year. We envision this young man to have a strong balance on and off the field, a love of faith and family, and to be a loyal teammate, just as Kevin was.

We want to thank all the coaches, players and families of the St. John Crusader football program and parish, for welcoming us this year, and we thank you for giving us an opportunity to continue to keeping Kevin’s legacy alive and well.

God Bless you all-

Dan and Denise Flach & Family
